Talk about a road trip… I get a daily newsletter from Hemmings Motor News online each morning, and today’s article was especially interesting. This 1902 Mercedes Simplex is scheduled to drive more than 1500 miles to the Pebble Beach concours d’Elegance in August. Amazing, this car is more than 100 years old.
Taking the Long Road…
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has announced that a 28hp, 1902 Mercedes Simplex, the oldest Mercedes on the road today, will be making an epic journey of 1,500 miles to arrive in central California for the August 15 event. This car, driven by Arturo and Deborah Keller and John Bentley, will be one of an estimated 24 to participate in the sixth annual Pebble Beach Motoring Classic driving event. This driving event begins in Seattle on August 3, and will wind its way down to Monterey by the middle of the month.
“The Motoring Classic is great prelude to the Pebble Beach Concours,” said Pebble Beach Chairman Sandra Button. “In a practical way, it demonstrates both the elegance and technical ability that we celebrate. Because the journey can prove challenging for even some of the more modern cars, it is just fantastic that the Mercedes Simplex, a car well past its century mark, will be making the drive. It will be a real pleasure to welcome this car to Pebble Beach.”
