This used SL55 AMG is a rare find as a used car, it was just traded in here at Sears Imports by a long time customer who replaced it with an equally cool car. This SL55 AMG Roadster had an original MSRP of over $124,000. Today it has 59,805 miles on its odometer and is for sale for $36,900. It is black with a Charcoal interior and a dark grey alcantara headliner.
It’s as fully equipped as you’d expect of a six figure car, navigation, KEYLESS GO, all the goodies. The previous owner rear ended someone with the car a couple of weeks ago, it was a low speed impact that crumpled the front grill of the car and scuffed the bumper, our body shop did the repairs to the vehicle, which were extremely minor… you could buy and own this one with pride.
It’s Sears Imports stock# 65727B and is available for sale today at a fraction of the vehicle’s original price, buy it today for just $36,900 and enjoy this long Spring and Summer with speed and style.
This is one of several Mercedes Benz CLK Cabriolet models currently in our inventory. When it’s 80 degrees in March, you can’t help but look forward to what might be the longest Spring / Summer season in Minnesota since the 1930s. What better way to enjoy this weather than in a drop top Mercedes Benz… and this particular car, a 2006 CLK350 Cabriolet represents a pretty incredible value.
This pewter CLK350 with black leather interior is a very nicely equipped car complete with the Premium Package including things like the upgraded harmon/kardon stereo system, Satellite radio, heated seats and a number of other options you’d expect in a Mercedes-Benz convertible. I have included a copy of the original window sticker / option list below for your reference. This car had an original MSRP price of almost $58,000.
This is a local, two owner vehicle that has been regularly serviced at Twin Cities Mercedes-Benz dealers throughout its life. It was just traded in here on a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle. It has a clean Carfax vehicle history report, no stories, just a nice, clean car, mileage is currently about 66,800 miles, and we all know the 3.5 liter V6 engine in this car is one of the most long lasting and robust that Mercedes-Benz manufactures, there are plenty of miles left in this one. It’s available today for just $21,900, Sears Imports stock# 66050A.
This is a 2009 Mercedes Benz SLK350 roadster with low miles, just turn over 23,000! This was leased when new here at Sears Imports, the car resided in Wayzata throughout its lease term, it was just returned from its lease period last week. We’ve inspected and serviced the car fully, it is now being sold as a Certified Pre Owned Mercedes Benz. The original 4 year / 50,000 mile factory warranty is in place on this car, once that expires, you get an additional year or up to 100,000 miles of extended Certified Pre Owned Warranty.
This particular car is Arctic White in color with black leather interior. I have included a scan of the original window sticker / option list below for your reference, but some of the options on this one include: the Premium I Package (P1 Package) including things like satellite radio, an iPod connector, auto dimming mirrors, rain sensing windshield wipers and a bunch of other options. It’s also got the Multimedia Package which gives you navigation, the upgraded harmon/kardon stereo system, all kinds of great music options, a music register hard drive for storing music, this one has it all.. it’s even got the heating package which includes heated seats and the AIRSCARF feature.
If you’ve been looking for a low mile, highly optioned SLK for the Summer, look no further. Original MSRP of this car was $59,055, it can be yours today for $38,900. This is Sears Imports stock# 20225, please give me a call if you’d like to schedule a test drive or set up a viewing of this fun roadster.
It’s unusual for me to be able to work different Pulp Fiction quotes into the Dave Knows Cars blog in the same week, but with this entry, I guess I did it… from the scene when Vincent Vega (Travolta) discusses his displeasure with a vandal who keyed his car after it had been safely stored for four years while he was in Amsterdam with Lance (Eric Stoltz), his Heroin dealer.
The short article below has been bouncing around different websites since last week when, apparently, John Travolta‘s 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was stolen. One account quoted Travolta estimating the car’s value at about $35,000, other reports call it a $100,000 car. I’ve got to believe Travolta is much closer to the actual value of his car than the Hollywood reporters.
According to Hollywood media reports, “Swordfish” actor left stranded in Santa Monica, California, as his car was stolen. A thief took 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL, and it was worth $100,000.
He was at Jaguar dealership for a short visit, but as his car got stolen, he returned back to dealership and waited for the cops to make crime report. Reports also say that no suspect has been identified yet. Motoring enthusiast John, 57, has a large collection of cars including a Rolls Royce, and a Jaguar XJ6 as well as vintage Ford cars.
He said in 2007: “I have a 55, 56 and 57 Thunderbird – American Fords in the great old tradition. I love the fact that they could achieve speed and distance with such style. I don’t use them for long journeys any more, but to just enjoy the drive.”

On Thursday evening a nice couple came walking in the door, arrived at my desk and said something to the affect of: “We’re just starting to look around for a fun convertible that we can take on the road, we don’t know anything about Mercedes-Benz cars, can you help us?”
This is one of my favorite kinds of customers to work with… is there anybody who is in the market for a Mercedes-Benz convertible that’s in a bad mood? Who’s just completely annoyed with the fact that they have to by a new car? No way. It’s one of the most fun things I can imagine doing.
This couple, from Walker, MN, was an absolute pleasure to work with. We looked at new and pre owned models of the Mercedes-Benz SL and SLK. They were also considering a BMW Z4 Roadster, I had a pre owned one of those to show them as well. They decided the SLK was probably the best vehicle for them… it’s got a retractable hard top, has enough room for a respectable amount of luggage, and is a lot of fun to drive… not to mention, it gets pretty good gas mileage for those long road trips.
We drove the new 2012 Mercedes SLK and a pre owned 2007 model SLK that we had to take off the showroom floor. Both SLKs are great cars, of course, the new one was about $60,000, the pre owned 2007 model with just 35,000 miles was just under $30,000. We looked at lease options on the 2012 and purchase options on the 2007… which I must say, is probably one of the nicest, most well cared for 2007 SLKs I’ve ever seen. If one looks closely at things like, the side bolsters of the seats, the door sills, condition of the trunk… all of those things can give you hints as to the care previous owners gave the car. This car had clearly been taken care of, and driven sparingly.
In the end, they chose to purchase the pre owned 2007 model… black with beige leather interior, the premium 1 Package, AIRSCARF and a number of other options that will make this a great car for the cross country road trips they’re planning in the coming years. Congratulations Sarah and Keith, and I hope you enjoy your SLK!
“Sensory Overload” might be a good description of my first week at Sears Imported Autos Mercedes-Benz in Minnetonka. I’m getting to know a new group of people, learning a new set of operational processes and digging into a much larger vehicle inventory than I’m used to dealing with, almost 300 vehicles total, over 200 of which are used cars, and I’m talking, used cars of all types spanning almost 80 years of automotive history, AWESOME!
We’ve got everything from a 1931 Ford Huckster truck to a very rare and valuable 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K, a 1948 Cadillac Convertible, a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220SE coupe to the more modern cars like the mid 1980s Porsche 928 I featured on the blog recently, to an SL500 from 2000 and a bunch of Certified Pre Owned Mercedes-Benz vehicles, a handful of Jaguars, Lexus (Lexi?), an awesome 2010 Cadillac CTS-V 6 speed, we even have a Bentley and Rolls Royce at the moment. It’s hard to describe or mention them all.
In order to present this great mix of vehicles to Dave Knows Cars blog readers I decided to create a new blog category entitled the “Precious Metals Report”. That was actually one of the names I was kicking around for my blog when the idea for Dave Knows Cars was just that, an idea. This new category will be prominently featured on the front page of the blog, I hope to add something new and interesting vehilces a couple of times a week. You can always click on the category title to see all of the past entries in that category, as you can with any category title on the front page of the blog.
If you see something you like, you’re curious about or interested in, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and give me a call or drop me an email. Please, give me an excuse to go on a test drive in a 1968 427 Corvette Convertible or a ‘Young Classic’ 1978 Mercedes Benz 450SL.
It was a good May for Mercedes-Benz USA, sales were up, over last year and a number of specific model sales were up considerably over the same period last year. I am happy to report that I not only helped in selling some of the cars adding up to this more than 20,000 units sold, but I also bought one.
The May deals on the new C300 4matic were too good to pass up so I gave up my Volvo V70R wagon and stepped into a C class. While it’s the ‘entry level car’ and people always wonder how they will be received it has already won me over. It handles extremely well, has plenty of power for driving around town, commuting and for a couple of short highway trips I’ve already taken. The C300 is just right and with the 4matic all wheel drive system will be great in the Minnesota Winter.
The official MB Press release and sales chart by vehicle class is below:
Sales Up 5.9% for the Month and 8.5 % Year-to-Date

MBUSA’s compact SUV, the GLK-Class, finished third in volume with monthly sales of 2,214, up 22.1% over last year. Additionally, sales of the versatile R-Class crossover were up 237 % over May 2010.

New Mercedes-Benz Financial special APR finance rates were released today for June 2011. They remain largely the same as last month, with the addition of special financing on GL450 and 550 models. That’s a fairly rare finance special, I don’t see much on the GL450 very often, and I can’t remember the last time there were any finance specials on the high end GL550 SUV. Rates are 2.9% up to 36 months or 3.9% up to 66 months on new 2011 model GLs.
C (300 + 350)
GL (450 + 550)
C, M and GLK class vehicles continue at 1.9% for a short 36 month finance term and a 2.9% rate for up to 66 months. The E class uses the same rates as last month, and the same rates as the GL class, 2.9% up to 36 months or 3.9% up to 66 months.
It’s shaping up to be a good Summer for new Mercedes-Benz vehicles, these rates make it easier to get into the vehicle you’ve got your eye on.
What does this 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 4matic sedan have in common with this 1960 Cadillac convertible? They both have an automatic headlight dimming system! Mercedes-Benz made the Adaptive High Bean Assist feature available on the ‘new body style’ E class cars in 2010. The systems essentially keeps an eye on the road ahead of you at night, while you’re driving with your high beams on a desolate road, the car can sense the headlights of oncoming traffic up ahead and automatically dim the headlamps as not to bother the driver of the oncoming car.
The technology Mercedes-Benz uses is a sensor embedded in the top of the windshield. It’s considered a safety feature by Mercedes-Benz, as it allows you to have the best, brightest lights blazing when appropriate, giving you a commanding view of the road, even at night to keep you safe. One might also consider it a convenience feature, as you don’t constantly have to adjust your high beams as oncoming traffic appears. Learn more about the Mercedes-Benz Adaptive High Beam Assist feature on the E class HERE at MBUSA.com.
What’s funny is that a similar system was available on a number of American made vehicles, most notably, Cadillacs beginning in the mid 1950s. The red 1960 Cadillac convertible pictured here was at Lake Country Classics in Minneapolis when I visited that shop last week. Bruce Kelly, proprietor of Lake Country Classics and vintage Mercedes-Benz SL authority generally works on and restores Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the occasional Jaguar, but this time he had a customer’s 1960 Cadillac convertible on hand.
I saw this thing sticking up on the dash of the Cadillac and I asked him what it was for. Bruce explained to me that it was the sensor for the automatic high beam adjustment. When it senses the headlights of an oncoming car it automatically adjusts your high beams back down to the regular headlight setting… on a 1960 Cadillac, it was available earlier than that, in the mid 1950s.
Of course, the technology Mercedes-Benz employs for the Adaptive High Beam Assist feature is far more advanced that what Cadillac was using 50 years ago. The modern Mercedes-Benz system works better, more efficiently, more quickly and more reliably than the old Caddy system, but it’s interesting to know that the idea of not having to worry about blinding oncoming drivers at night with your high beams was thought about and essentially ‘solved’ more than 50 years ago in Detroit.
There is always something to see and learn when you visit Bruce at Lake Country Classics in Minneapolis, it’s a bit off the beaten path, but if you can find it, it’s worth a visit. This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL was parked next to the Cadillac when I arrived last week. The 190 is currently for sale on eBay… with its $35,000 reserve price already reached with about 5 days left in the auction.
